How to Master the Dimensional Peekaboo Hair Color Technique
Master the peekaboo hair color technique with Pulp Riot educator Kelly Martin. Learn high-lift base prep, zigzag sectioning, and semi-permanent application.
Overview
Peekaboo hair color is a placement technique where hair color is applied to the middle or bottom layers of the hair, remaining hidden beneath the top layer when worn down and revealing itself through movement, parting shifts, or updos. Achieving a seamless, customizable peekaboo requires prepping the canvas with high-lift permanent color or lightener, using a zigzag horseshoe parting to diffuse demarcation lines, and applying intermixable semi-permanent formulas through a melting technique to create depth and longevity.
The Highlights
- Peekaboo color adds hidden dimension: Vivid shades are placed beneath the top layer, staying subtle when hair is down and showing through with movement or styling.
- Sectioning creates a seamless result: Prepare the canvas, then use a zigzag horseshoe parting and leave a narrow perimeter uncolored to soften lines and keep the color concealed in updos.
- Apply and care for color strategically: Use a color-melting technique to blend semi-permanent shades; process and rinse according to product directions to help preserve vibrancy.

Peekaboo hair color is all about the element of surprise. This clever placement technique applies vibrant or contrasting shades around either, the middle, bottom layers of the hair, it can be a big section, or it could just be something small.

When worn down, the color stays hidden beneath a veil of your natural or base shade, only making an appearance depending on how you may style your hair, whether it’s some beach waves, or any movement, as well as a shift in your parting, or a playful updo. The look is completely customizable per client; to achieve a seamless Peek A Boo technique you must prep the canvas. First, you are going to choose a lighter shade than the base. Then you are going to section out the hair that’s not going to be lightened, a Pro-Tip: Use diagonal back or forward sections as well as zig-zag parting to ensure that you have a blend and diffuse lines of demarcations.
For this video we use our FACTION8 high-Lift permanent color to get all the base to the blonde that our model has. Then we separated the top hair using a zigzag horseshoe parting. Then took a 1” subsection starting 1” from the hair line around the round of the head in zigzag parting. We then started applying intermixable semi-permanent formulas through a color melting technique to create depth and longevity in our sub-section.
The Canvas Blueprint: Who This Technique Is Designed For
- Dual-Identity Clients: Professionals who need understated hair color during business hours, but want vibrant, statement-making tones visible when styled up or curled.
- First-Time Vivid Candidates: Clients transitioning from natural shades to creative color without committing to a full-head lightening service.
- Low-Maintenance Canvas Requests: Individuals who want minimal root regrowth exposure, as the natural crown veil conceals the root transition over time.
- Dimensional Color Enthusiasts: Artists seeking to layer contrasting tones—such as warm peach, marigold, and coral blush—beneath neutral or high-lift blonde foundations.

Step-by-Step Execution Guide
- 1. Canvas Preparation with Permanent Hair Color
- Divide the hair into four standard quadrants using a center profile parting and a radial ear-to-ear parting.
- Mix FACTION8 11-11 and the -11 Booster at a 1:1 ratio with the designated Pulp Riot Developer.
- Begin application in the nape area where the natural canvas is darkest and requires the longest processing time. Apply thoroughly, saturating sections with higher concentrations of underlying warm pigments.
- Move toward the front quadrants, working outward and away from the face to keep the front hairline completely free of product and protect the client's skin.
- Process completely, rinse, shampoo, and dry the canvas thoroughly before applying semi-permanent shades.
- 2. Strategic Zigzag Sectioning
- Establish a horseshoe section around the parietal ridge.
- Carve a distinct zigzag pattern throughout the entire horseshoe perimeter using the tail of a comb. The zigzag diffusion eliminates blunt shelf lines, enabling the veil layer to cover the vivid tones smoothly when worn straight.
- Isolate a half-inch perimeter around the front hairline and the bottom nape hairline. Leaving this perimeter free of vivid dye allows the client to tie hair back into a ponytail without exposing the peekaboo placement.
- 3. Applying the Warm Semi-Permanent Color Melt
- Take a subsection from the zigzag parting guide. Apply Cupid directly to the root area with a color brush, rolling the brush horizontally back and forth to guarantee total mechanical saturation.
- Rather than using a towel to clean gloves between steps, flip to the clean back side of the gloved hand to hold the strand.
- Apply Blush over the mid-lengths and ends. Use two fingers to blend the transition zone where the two formulas meet, pulling the pigment down the strand for a seamless color melt.
- For the subsequent zigzag subsection, apply Eloped to the upper area and blend Desert Canyon through the ends.
- Alternate these two color melts across the entire isolated horseshoe band.
- 4. Processing and Rinsing
- Allow the semi-permanent color formulas to process for 25 to 40 minutes at room temperature.
- Rinse using high-pressure, cold water. Cold water locks the cuticle, preserving vibrancy, preventing intermix bleeding, and maximizing post-color shine.

Technical Common Mistakes: What to Avoid
Essential Pulp Riot Colorist Formulations
FAQ
-
How do you blend two semi-permanent colors in a peekaboo section?
Apply the deeper base color at the root area using horizontal brush strokes. Apply the lighter shade to the mid-lengths and ends, overlapping slightly. Use two gloved fingers to stroke downward over the junction point to create a seamless gradient.
-
Why is cold water necessary when rinsing semi-permanent hair color?
Cold water keeps the hair cuticle closed during rinsing, preventing pigments from washing out prematurely or bleeding into adjacent lighter sections.
-
How much does a salon peekaboo hair color service typically cost?
Salon pricing ranges between $150 and $350 or more depending on stylist expertise, whether pre-lightening or high-lift base prep is required, and the number of custom vivid shades blended into the placement.
-
How long does a peekaboo hair color service last?
Pulp Riot semi-permanent formulations last up to 50 washes, fading true to tone over time. Longevity depends on cold-water washing, sulfate-free hair care products, and reduced heat styling.
-
What is a peekaboo hair color?
Peekaboo hair color is a placement technique where hair dye is applied to the under-layers of the hair while the top layer remains untouched or neutral. The hidden shade shows through only when the hair moves, is parted differently, or is styled in an updo.
-
How do professional stylists section hair for a peekaboo color?
Stylists create a horseshoe section along the parietal ridge, using a zigzag parting pattern to soften transition lines. A half-inch margin is left uncolored around the nape and hairline perimeter to keep the color hidden during updos.
-
Can peekaboo hair color be achieved without bleach?
Yes. On virgin hair requiring moderate lift, high-lift permanent color like FACTION8 11-11 combined with boosters can lift and deposit tone in a single step. Naturally light or pre-lightened hair can receive direct semi-permanent dye without any lightener.
-
What is the advantage of using a zigzag parting instead of a straight line?
A zigzag parting breaks up the shelf effect that straight lines create. This disperses the color naturally under the veil layer, making it easy to conceal for professional settings or expose with layered styling.
